How text-to-speech works
TTS software takes digital text — from a document, an ebook, a website, or an app — and converts it into synthetic speech. Most modern TTS tools also highlight text as it's read, either word by word or sentence by sentence, which lets the reader track the audio against the visual text at the same time.
This combination of hearing and seeing the same content can make longer or denser passages more manageable, since the reader isn't relying only on decoding each word visually to keep up with the sentence.
Where it fits: digital text
TTS is built for digital content. It works directly on PDFs, ebooks, browser pages, word processing documents, and any app that supports a read-aloud feature. It needs text that's already in digital, selectable form — it can't read a printed page on its own, which is a gap that scanning tools like reading pens are built to fill instead.
Built-in vs. dedicated TTS tools
Many devices and platforms now include TTS as a built-in accessibility feature, requiring no extra software. Dedicated TTS apps typically add more control: adjustable reading speed, different voice options, better highlighting, and support for a wider range of file types. Which one makes sense depends mostly on how much control and file compatibility a person needs.
What TTS helps with
TTS helps a reader access the content of a text without having to decode every word themselves, which can reduce fatigue over long reading sessions and free up attention for understanding meaning rather than sounding out words. For many people with dyslexia, this makes grade-level or work-level material accessible well before decoding skills alone would allow independent reading of the same material.
What TTS does not do
TTS does not build decoding or phonics skills, and it is not a form of reading instruction. It gives access to content; the skill of independently sounding out and recognizing written words is built through structured, evidence-based literacy instruction, separate from any assistive technology. The two are complementary — instruction over the long term, TTS for access in the present — not competing options.
Practical notes on choosing a TTS tool
Voice quality, highlighting style, and speed control vary a lot between tools, and personal preference matters — a voice or pace that feels natural to one person can feel distracting to another. It's worth trying a tool on real material, not just a demo, before deciding whether it fits.
