Two different jobs: teaching reading vs. supporting access
It helps to separate two things that often get blurred together. One is reading instruction — structured, phonics-based teaching that helps a person build decoding skills over time. The other is assistive technology, which helps a person get at the content of a text right now, even while decoding is still difficult. Tools in this second category do not teach anyone to read.
The International Dyslexia Association describes assistive technology in terms of access: it helps a person complete a literacy task — reading a worksheet, writing an email, following a recipe — that would otherwise be blocked or slowed by a decoding difficulty. Whether a given tool is the right choice depends on the person, the environment, and the specific task, not on the tool being universally "the best."
The main categories of dyslexia tools
Most tools that help with dyslexia fall into a handful of categories. They overlap in what they accomplish — getting text into a form the person can process — but differ in setup, cost, and where they fit best.

Text-to-speech software
TTS software converts digital text into spoken audio, usually with synchronized highlighting so the listener can follow along visually and audibly at once. It works well for anything already in digital form: ebooks, PDFs, browser text, and school platforms that support read-aloud extensions.
Its main limitation is that it needs digital text to start with. A printed handout or a page in a paper textbook has to be converted first, which is where scanning tools come in.
Reading pens and scanning devices
A reading pen is a handheld device that scans a line of printed text and reads it aloud, sometimes also showing a definition or translation. It fills the gap that pure software TTS leaves: printed materials. It is a narrow but genuinely useful tool for that one situation — a worksheet, a printed test, a physical book — rather than a general solution for every reading task.
Audiobooks and screen readers
Audiobooks give access to full-length texts without any scanning or setup, which makes them a low-friction option for assigned novels or independent reading. Screen readers go further, reading not just body text but menus, buttons, and full documents, which makes them more relevant for navigating software and longer digital work than for a single printed page.
Choosing between them
No single tool covers every situation a person with dyslexia runs into. A student might use TTS software for digital homework, a reading pen for an in-class worksheet, and an audiobook for a required novel — all in the same week. The right combination depends on what format the material is in, where the person is when they need it, and what feels least disruptive to use in that setting.
